Griego y copto

How to Pronounce Them
Most Greek letters sound close to how they are written. A few common exceptions:
- Χ (chi) sounds like the Spanish j in “jamás,” not like “ch” in English.
- Ξ (xi) sounds like “ksee.”
- Φ (phi) sounds like a soft f.
What Does Each Greek Letter Mean?
These are the Greek letters people search for most, and what they are actually used for.
| Greek Letter | Common Uses |
|---|---|
| Α α Alpha | Represents the first item in a list. In statistics, alpha is the significance level in a test, for example α = 0.05. |
| Β β Beta | In finance, measures how volatile a stock is compared to the market. In physics, it describes beta particles. |
| Γ γ Gamma | Used for gamma rays in physics and for the Euler–Mascheroni constant in mathematics. |
| Δ δ Delta | Uppercase Δ represents a change or difference between two values. Lowercase δ is used for very small changes. |
| Ε ε Epsilon | Represents a very small quantity close to zero in calculus and mathematical analysis. |
| Ζ ζ Zeta | Appears in the Riemann zeta function, a central topic in number theory. |
| Η η Eta | In engineering, represents the efficiency of a machine or process. |
| Θ θ Theta | Almost always used to represent an angle. |
| Ι ι Iota | In everyday speech, “not one iota” means a tiny amount. That phrase comes directly from this letter. |
| Κ κ Kappa | In statistics, measures how much two evaluators agree, known as Cohen’s kappa. |
| Λ λ Lambda | Represents wavelength in physics. In programming, it describes anonymous functions known as lambda functions. |
| Μ μ Mu | Represents the mean in statistics and the “micro” prefix in units of measurement. |
| Ν ν Nu | Used to represent frequency in physics. |
| Ξ ξ Xi | Appears in statistics to name random variables. |
| Ο ο Omicron | One of the least used letters as a symbol outside historical or linguistic contexts. |
| Π π Pi | Represents 3.14159, the ratio between a circle’s diameter and its circumference. |
| Ρ ρ Rho | Represents density in physics and correlation in statistics. |
| Σ σ Sigma | Uppercase Σ means the sum of a series. Lowercase σ represents standard deviation. |
| Τ τ Tau | In physics, describes torque or a characteristic time in a process. |
| Υ υ Upsilon | Less common, appears in some physics formulas. |
| Φ φ Phi | Represents the golden ratio (1.618) and magnetic flux in physics. |
| Χ χ Chi | Used in the chi-squared test, a common tool in statistics. |
| Ψ ψ Psi | Represents the wave function in quantum mechanics. |
| Ω ω Omega | Lowercase ω represents angular velocity in physics. Uppercase Ω is the symbol for the ohm, the unit of electrical resistance. |
